Joseph Licitra, 95 years old – MyVeronaNJ
Mr. Joseph Licitra, 95, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2021 at his son’s home in Verona.
Visitations will be held at Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona, on Wednesday, September 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. 10:30
Born in New York, Mr. Licitra moved with his family to Italy during the Depression at the age of six and grew up in Sicily before returning to New York after World War II. He and his wife, Vincenza, lived in Bergen County before moving to Verona in 2003.
While in Sicily, he attended university to study Latin and become a teacher. Upon his return to the United States, he worked as a garment presser for a manufacturing company in New York City. In the end, he saved enough to open his own sandwich shop, Sal’s Hero Shop, on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, near Yankee Stadium. Here he was well known and frequented by notables and the neighborhood, and retired in 1981 after 30 years.
Mr. Licitra was predeceased by his beloved wife Vincenza (née Piccitto) Licitra.
He is survived by his beloved children, Salvatore Licitra (Laurette), Emanuele Licitra (Sharon) and Joseph Licitra, Jr. (Janet Russo); her siblings, Mary Marchello and Emanuele Licitra; cherished grandchildren, Jamie Sees (John) and Allison Licitra; Nicolas and Giulia Licitra; Philippe, Joseph and Carissa Licitra; and great-grandchildren, Olive Ann, Luca Joseph and Daniel.
