Rome, February 16, 2022 – Terna, the company that manages the national electricity network, has launched the first works foreseen in the plan for the rationalization and renewal of the electricity network of the metropolitan city of Catania, to guarantee greater efficiency and sustainability, for a total value of more than 50 million euros.
The works, included in the 2021 Development Plan and strategic for all the infrastructure in the region, involve the construction of six new cables completely underground, with a total length of more than 25 km, and the subsequent demolition of three power lines aerial in urban areas. of high population density over approximately 30 km, plus more than 120 supports. The dismantling, which will return more than 20 hectares of land to the territory, will begin in the spring.
The connections will be equipped with remote and real-time monitoring systems to prevent breakdowns, thanks to the installation of sensors that collect information and then process it.
Among the new underground cables, some are awaiting authorisation, while work is currently underway on the 3.1 km “Catania East PC – Catania North PC” power line, which will be completed within the year. Work will continue on the “Catania East PC – Villa Bellini PC” and “San Giovanni Galermo PC – San Giovanni La Punta PC – Acicastello PC” routes.
Terna and the technical offices of the Municipality of Catania have previously agreed on a plan to reduce limitations on the urban road network. Construction sites will be advanced gradually to limit disruption. Once the work is complete, the company will restore the roadway by asphalting the sections affected by the construction site.
The plan for the redevelopment of the Catania electricity network is part of the program agreement for power system security improvement and regional land use planning projectssigned by the Sicilian Region, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Terna, on September 18, 2019, with the aim of optimizing synergies and pursuing full environmental, territorial and social sustainability in energy through the close involvement of local administrations and the population when defining electricity development actions and projects.
