Rome, April 14, 2022 – The Department of Energy and Utilities of the Sicilian Region has authorized project of Ternat for the construction of two underground cabled power lines, which will affect nine municipalities of the metropolitan city of Catania.
The two new 150 kV connections, in which Terna will invest approximately 30 million euros, will allow greater meshing of the local electricity network, which is experiencing a significant increase in energy needs due to tourist flows, especially in summer.
New “San Giovanni Galermo–Cable connection from San Giovanni La Punta, which will be approximately 6 km long, will involve the municipalities of Catania, Gravina di Catania, Tremestieri Etneo, San Giovanni La Punta and Sant’Agata Li Battiati, while new San Giovanni La Punta–Aci Castello” a cable connection of about 9 km will involve the municipalities of San Giovanni La Punta, Tremestieri Etneo, San Gregorio di Catania, Valverde, Aci Catena and Aci Castello.
During the authorization phase for the second connection, a modification to the route resulting in a reduction of approximately 2 km in its length was approved, which means less land occupation and less impact on the territory.
The project will also include the demolition of three obsolete overhead lines that serve densely populated areas, for a total of approximately 30 km and 120 supports.
A stretch of the “Acireale–The Fontanarossa overhead power line will be demolished from the next few months. The rationalization will return approximately 20 hectares of land to local areas, along with other sections of the same power line and the overhead power lines “San Giovanni Galermo-san Giovanni La Punta” and “San Giovanni La Punta–Viagrande” to be demolished in the years to come.
The project authorized by the Region is part of a broader program for the rationalization and modernization of the electrical network of the Metropolitan City of Catania, with the aim of guaranteeing greater safety, quality and sustainability of the transmission service throughout the area. The plan is part of the program agreement signed in September 2019 by the Sicilian Region, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Terna.
