Welbee ALIVE Charity Foundation sponsor tours Sicily

Thirty-six cyclists set off on an ambitious 1,000km ride around the Sicilian coast today to benefit the charity ALIVE Foundation, which raises vital funds for cancer research.

The six-day trek will see cyclists tackle the entire coastal route around Sicily, reaching an altitude of 8,000 meters before returning to Pozzallo.

“Our big plan is to ride for six days until May 6, rain or shine, all to help raise money for this very worthy cause,” said one of the riders. “We are all aware that the University of Malta needs financial support to fund cancer research. Every donation helps us achieve our goal of investing more in research, to improve the quality of life for cancer patients in Malta and beyond.

As the first local foundation to raise funds and awareness for medical research in Malta, ALIVE Charity Foundation believes that the most effective way to fight cancer is to provide targeted support to all those affected, while investing in strategic research that accelerates diagnosis, identifies causes and, eventually, can find cures.

While ALIVE funds PhD scholarships at the University of Malta, since its launch in 2013 it has donated over €135,000 for breast cancer research, €170,000 for cancer research children and €80,000 for a children’s recreation area within the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Center – all with the help of corporate sponsors and donations from the public.

Between 2019 and 2021, the foundation also donated a total sum of €227,000 to the University of Malta to support seven cancer research projects during the COVID-19 pandemic, which abruptly halted momentum. rapid research hard earned in previous years.

Among other corporate sponsors of the upcoming challenge, supermarket chain Welbee’s donated to ALIVE as a “supporting sponsor” for cancer research. On April 23, during one of the pre-challenge training sessions, the cycling team stopped at Welbee’s in Pendergardens. Here, Welbee Marketing Manager Joseph Vassallo presented a donation to Elton Barry, the secretary of the ALIVE Charity Foundation.
