Netflix’s six-part docuseries, ‘Vendetta: Truth, Lies and the Mafia ”, follows the parallel trials of journalist Pino Maniaci and former judge Silvana Saguto in Italy. Through the docuseries, viewers uncover the complex story behind Pino and Silvana’s motivations to seek justice through their respective lines of work. Who is Silvana Saguto?
Silvana Saguto chose to become a judge in 1981. She said that for her it was always about contributing to society. One of her first high-profile cases was that of deputy judge in the trial of notorious Sicilian gangster Toto Riina in 1993. Silvana is married to Lorenzo Caramma and they have three children. On the show, she spoke about devoting her entire life to fighting the Mafia in Sicily and how that made her many enemies, causing her to live in fear of death.
In 2010, Silvana was appointed President of the Preventive Measures Department of the Court of Palermo in Italy. With this position, she believed that she could do a lot more good than she had already done. Silvana said Mafia assets could be seized and placed under the direction of the department if there was substantial evidence. They would only be returned if proof of legality was produced. But Silvana has also been accused of mismanaging seized assets, among other things. She was also accused to accept bribes and hire friends and relatives for high paying jobs at these foreclosed businesses.
On the show, it was stated that she was in favor of hiring Gaetano Cappellano Seminara, a lawyer from Palermo, as a receiver in exchange for earnings. But she noted that the only reason Gaetano was hired was because he was well regarded in the field. The prosecution said Silvana and her family had financial problems and had asked Gaetano for money. Her husband’s main source of income between 2006 and 2015 was also Gaetano. After his indictment, Silvana was removed from his presidency and the judicial.

The prosecution also accused Silvana for receiving money from Gaetano at her home in June 2015. Finally, in October 2020, Silvana was found guilty of corruption, abuse of power and falsifying public documents. However, according to the show, she was acquitted of the conspiracy and embezzlement charges. After her conviction, Silvana noted, “I never took advantage for myself of the power that I had and especially of the benefits that I could have drawn from it in terms of career and economy.
The former judge was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months behind bars. Lorenzo and Gaetano were also sentenced to prison terms for their involvement. Silvana hoped to overturn the verdict on appeal. After the conviction, his home in Palermo was seized by the court. According to the show, she would be sent to jail after the High Court handed down her sentence.
